Request or reserve items

Around 8 million items held by the Bodleian Libraries are stored in closed stacks or offsite. These are not immediately available but must be requested for delivery to a library. You can order books for delivery to the Bodleian Health Care Libraries to consult there. Find out more about how to request and reserve items via SOLO.

Some BHCL and RSL books can be transferred between the various BHCL and RSL sites. To request a transfer, email HCL Enquiries or RSL Enquiries with the book and delivery site details.

Training and guides

The Bodleian Libraries offer free information skills training sessions, from beginner to advanced level, delivered across Headington and in the city centre. A number of these are specific to Medicine, but MSD staff and students can also sign up for any of our other sessions. Find out more about Bodleian Libraries iSkills sessions.

Group and one-to-one training

We offer individual help and advice sessions held in our libraries, where you are, or online. You can contact us to arrange small group or one-to-one training sessions in our libraries or at a location to suit you and tailored to suit your specific needs. Topics covered can include essential and advanced search skills, making the most of PubMed, finding online journals, reference management software, and open access publishing. Most sessions include hands-on practice.

Help guides

As well as the services offered within our libraries and by our staff, there are many online resources to help you find information, learn new skills, and keep up to date. Our help guides offer information on a wide range of topics such as pre-clinical medicine, biomedical sciences, systematic reviews, medical law and ethics, and the Oxford University Research Archive (ORA). Browse the full list of subject and help guides in the Medical Sciences

Our bibliometrics guide covers a range of 'impact factor' tools and concepts such as h-index, Altmetric, journal rankings, Journal Citation Reports, SCImago Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Essential Science Indicators, ORCID, and much more. You can also contact your local outreach librarian for one-to-one help and advice, or to organise a training session for your team.

We can help you with public engagement with your research, including help with making your work discoverable, help you research public engagement strategies, and help you find sources of support for public engagement. We may also be able to help you engage with the public via links with our displays and exhibitions.
