What is the UK Web Archive?
The UK Web Archive (UKWA) is a collaboration between the UK legal deposit libraries. Working together, the legal deposit libraries aim to preserve and make accessible websites and some social media permanently for future generation.
The UKWA aims to collect all UK web pages at least once a year under the Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations 2013. If a website is of national importance, it will be crawled and harvested regularly over a given year to capture rapidly changing content.
The legal deposit libraries also actively select websites for subject-based collections such as Brexit and Gender Equality. Collections are also created in rapid response to an event: for example, the Grenfell Tower Fire or VE/VJ Day 70th Anniversary 1945-2015 collections. This is a fascinating resource for researchers across all disciplines.
